Disqus SEO Looks Good From Here Comments

I was a little hesitant to install the Disqus comment system, but I took the plunge to see how I liked it and I find many of the features so helpful and superior to Wordpress’s native comment system that I’ve decided to make the switch permanent. The Disqus dashboard, the universal login for all other sites using Disqus, and the ability to reply and delete comments by responding to the notification e-mail are all major reasons that I’ve decided to stick with the switch. There were two concerns that I had that almost had me hit the uninstall:

1. SEO - I’m not an expert in SEO but I have explored the basics and have seen the value that comments on a post can add to your search ranking, so I was concerned about losing that traffic source. In looking into the subject this issue was one that many bloggers had expressed and is one that Disqus is taking seriously. For Wordpress users, the Disqus plugin uses their API and there doesn’t seem to be a problem. I did a little experiment to make sure that the Disqus comments are being indexed correctly, and while I can’t say they have the same value as a Wordpress comments, what I see is good enough for me:

Obviously not heavily searched terms, but it’s what I could quickly pull from my existing comments, I encourage you to try the same thing for yourself. You’ll also note that there is no duplicate content from Disqus showing in the searches.

2. Not Hosting Comments – The problems with not hosting your own comments were made clear this past week as a database error at Disqus made all comments unavailable for a short time. Hopefully this point will be moot in a month or so as Disqus implements the export to Wordpress feature that’s in the works. If Disqus goes down, you’ll still have all the data. It will be a huge reduction in risk and should help sway those bloggers who aren’t quite sure about making the change.

  • Disqus is definitely one of the most powerful commenting systems out there. Beyond having fabulous customer service, it also is seeming to promote a really social commenting community on blogs.

  • It does use a nofollow attribute. Yet I think its still helpful. As for me to comment on blogs that are related to your niche either its dofollow or nofollow its still ok. :)

    I've been considering switching to Disqus myself so I did a bit of research. There are so many blog owners out there absolutely satisfied by this commenting system. Although they all had their concerns, most of them kept Disqus. Besides the SEO problem many thought they'll lose their comments when they transfer. Amazingly, just one fellow had this problem and he received a reply to the post where he said about it. The reply was from a Disqus employee. I was mesmerized to see they actually read blogs related to their service and offer to help fix problems.

  • The only thing wrong with Disqus is that there is no directory of disqus blogs like commentluv has. Comment luv does not record previous comments and that is why I don't like to use it.

  • Matt Cutts has just revealed that google handles nofollow links differenly than everyone had thought. The long and the short is that having lots of nofollowed links out of your site can hurt the pagerank of your internal pages and maybe even your homepage. Hosting comments on your site does just this - it has lots of nofollowed links to the commenters sites.

  • How amusing - I wanted to see if disqus comments show up in the search engine so I searched for this first comment by AuthoritySeo. It sure does... multiple times in fact for all the places he's posted this exact comment. So yep, it works for SEO purposes and for spammers masquerading as SEO experts.

  • The only issue is you don't 'own' your comments...what happens if disqus loses your data?
  • With the current versions of the plugin it won't matter and you do own your
    comments, with the comments sync'd you have all the comments locally so if
    Disqus loses your data, then it will just resync from your blog.

  • While I just started using disqus, I agree with Skype Helper's point about having comments housed locally as well. While the disqus commenting system is nice, I also prefer having local comments housed under my own WP install.
  • I should note that the current versions of the Wordpress Disqus plugin syncs
    your comments between Disqus and Wordpress. You get the best of both
    worlds!
  • Agree, local comment hosting is vital - both for SEO and for reliability reasons. You DON'T want to suddenly find yourself with all your comments lost!! Good comments are half the value of a good blog!
