Upgrading WordPress on GoDaddy Comments

Feb6

GoDaddy makes it easy to install a WordPress blog by doing it for you for free, but after that you’re on your own. I had been content with the default install until recently, but I really shouldn’t have been. New features and bug fixes aside, you should keep your install current to stay ahead of security flaws. If a security flaw fix is released that means the problem it has corrected is generally explained in enough detail for hackers to exploit those who haven’t upgraded.

Upgrading looked like it was going to be a rough process, to do it right you should really follow these steps:

  1. Download the newest version of Wordpress
  2. Create a backup of your Wordpress Database (go ahead and copy your layout info as well)
  3. Put your site on “Hold” with a message that it’s being worked on and will be back soon
  4. Stop all plugins
  5. Apply the Wordpress Update
  6. Turn plugins back on and upgrade to new versions as needed
  7. Return your site to it’s “Live” state

Sounds like a lot of work right? Well there are certainly plugins that will do several of those steps for you and I was going around collecting them when I happened across the mother of all update plugins, Automatic Upgrade! It does everything for you except download the newest versions of your current plugins.

Now upgrading your site on GoDaddy(or anywhere else for that matter) is a breeze, you just run the Automatic Upgrade steps from the Manage portion of your Wordpress Admin and all the steps above are handled leaving you handle just plugin updates if they are needed.

  • You have got it easy with GoDaddy. With 1and1, you have to include an ini file to upgrade to php5 and also add another file to the wp-admin folder. it ends up working fine after that, but we shouldn't have to mess with all that!
  • Why you don't use zirona plugin, without hassle, upgrading wordpress is very smooth :D

Nice and clean explanation, thanks. Sometimes upgrading Wordpress can be very tricky and desesperating !
  • Wow that was pretty easy, I kind of hate how they run their business but thanks for this, it was real easy.
  • I use the plugins too, but I don't use godaddy hosting anymore
  • I personally hate Godaddy for hosting, Cpanel is the only way to fly.

  • Thanks, I've been looking for a step-by-step guide for upgrading wordpress on GoDaddy for quite some time now.
  • I've been with GoDaddy hosting for 2 years now and they've been great. Server uptime has been 99.8% and speeds are incredible. Rarely have I used their support system, when I do response times vary from 1 - 7 hours which is great.
  • If above doesn't work, try this. This is the last option upgrade.

    1) Back up Wordpress MySQL DATABASE!
    2) Delete all Wordpress files in directories, except "wp-content" folder & contents within that folder!!!
--Once all set, wait about 15 minutes for GoDaddy to refresh--
    3) Setup new MySQL database for the new Wordpress you're about to install.
    4) Reinstall Wordpress from scratch. Do not restore/import the MySQL Database yet!
    5) Setup Wordpress options, (ie previous theme, update & activate plug-ins, PERMALINK SETTINGS)
--Once all set, wait about 15 minutes for GoDaddy to refresh--
    6) Restore MySQL Database into the new database (step #3)
  • Good tip. After backing up Wordpress, I am going to give this a try! Thanks for the help and I hope that it works well. As you said, Godaddy did help me setup Wordpress but I am not on my own.
  • Thank you so much for this post. I too "stumbled" upon this upgrade plugin but I was sure it wouldn't work on GoDaddy. Honestly I was afraid I would screw something up. But after reading your post I'm going to give it a try.
