Sports on the Web 2.0 Comments

Aug27

baseball3.jpgSports is an interesting area for Web 2.0 to seep into. Most users obtain their sports info from the big Guys. Based upon metrics ESPN.com, CBS.Sportsline.com and CNNSI.com rule the roost. You can get your news and fast at that. The following Web 2.0 players seek to add something additional. The ability to select your teams and get only news for your teams. Community or the ability to interact with other fans. The ability to blog and to comment. The ability to be a reporter and post user created photos and videos from the game. This is an interesting part of these Web 2.0 startups. The leader has to be FanNation. CNNSI is a formidable backer against some of the smaller startups. However the startups can gain a piece of the pie through innovation. After all that only benefits the end user. Anyhow here they are….

10 Sports Websites getting their Web 2.0 on.

  1. FanNation – http://www.fannation.com – “The Republic Of Sport”
CNNSi owns this one. So naturally it has sizable resources. It includes articles and pictures from CNN/SI. Not beta. Upon sign up the user has the ability to select their teams for each sport. It will then customize a news page based upon those teams.
  2. Yardbarker – http://yardbarker.com – “The Fan Powered Sports Network”

  4. Sportspyder – http://sportspyder.com
A relative unknown this site does a good job at letting the registered user select teams from each sport it then aggregates new for all of your teams. One feature they do not have is a remixed feed of all your teams. For example, their is a feed for the Atlanta Braves and a feed for Carolina Panthers but no way for me to mix the two on my custom page. This would be a real plus. I will go to yahoo pipes to get this done for now.

Another web 2.0 site is sportsviews.com
  • I just discovered this web 2.0 website called SportsPassion.com. A friend told me about the site after his rec league was sponsored by the website. I was impressed right away upon visiting the site by its look--very clean and professional. After playing around on the site for a little while i'm blown away by all the interactive tools that any team has--even a weekend softball team can have all this stuff at their disposal for FREE. I guess it's kinda like a facebook for the average everyday sports team. This site would really be great for any coach that wanted help organizing their team. Anyway, check it out...btw, my team is the Uni Boys
  • Thanks, great list, been looking for this! ....2 weeks ago I launched a web 2.0 video sharing community dedicated exclusively to sports and athletics www.zoombosports.com, created by athletes, for athletes. Soon we are releasing a high school recruiting platform to expose student-athletes to scholarship opportunities. Everybody let me know what you think. --May The Sports Be With Us All!
